By Hand is a series of community-based lookbooks focusing on different and fiber communities around the United States. Each issue features photo journals and interviews with both up-and-coming and well-known yarn designers and dyers, local yarn stores, knitwear designers, and other makers who share the philosophy and aesthetic of hand crafting functional forms to share and connect with others in the community. By Hand includes patterns as well as opportunities to explore what is beautiful and unique about each locale.

  • Issue one (October 2016) focuses on Portland, OR, including profiles of the big three PDX yarn lines – Brooklyn Tweed, Shibui Knits, and Woolfolk.
  • Issue two (January 2017) tours Portland, ME, including an interview with yarn maven Clara Parkes and designer Hannah Fettig.
  • Issue three (June 2017) takes a look at Nashville, TN, including a profile of Fringe Supply Co.
