Knit Potato

I try to not watch a lot of television, but lately it’s been difficult since there are so many good shows to binge on. I’ve worked out a compromise with myself, which is that I can watch television as long as I’m knitting or sewing at the same time. Sewing while watching TV tends to be a little more challenging, since I have to turn the volume to 100 to be able to hear anything.

To be honest, I’m still unable to take my eyes off of my hands while I knit in fear that I might drop a very important stitch, so I don’t really watch TV. It’s more of a listening and an occasional glance up to see if anything visually interesting is happening. Then I’m right back to concentrating on my hands so I don’t have to undo 20 rows.

There are only a handful of shows that I refuse to watch while I knit, since I actually want to watch the screen. Well, there is only one show really, and that’s Game of Thrones, and it’s only because I don’t want to miss the chance to see a dragon finally make an appearance. I end up disappointed every week, since the dragons never end up doing anything. I pretty much spend the entire show just yelling at the television. Oh, and I won’t knit while I watch Veep. I dedicate Veep watching to strictly laughing uncontrollably. Besides those two shows, everything else is an option for viewing/listening pleasure as I knit. (Side note, this post is by no means a recommendation of any of the shows I watch. I’m actually a little embarrassed to share many of the shows that I watch, but I’m going to do it anyways, so judge me with kindness.)

I totally have a type when it comes to the shows that I enjoy watching, regardless if I’m knitting in unison or not, and they are typically suspense detective shows or comedies. I’ve watched every crime show I can get my eyes and ears on, from Vera to Luther, with breaks in-between of The Good Guys reruns to lighten the mood. Once I watched The Killing, Top of the Lake, The Fall, and Broadchurch back-to-back. I was depressed for a month and refused to watch any television unless it was something that was going to make me cry-laugh. I now only allow myself to watch one murder mystery show at a time, and binge watching is limited.

Besides murder mysteries with many broody main characters, I love watching silly comedies. My new favorite comedy is Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. All the characters in this show put a smile on my face. It reminds me of The Good Guys, in the way that I can re-watch it and it will still make me laugh as if it’s the first time I’ve seen the episode. Oh, and there is a murder mystery comedy that I found on accident one day that I also really enjoy watching while I knit, called Death in Paradise. I found the one show besides Castle (I LOVE CASTLE), that combined my two types into a nice little present.

I really need to watch less television and listen to more podcasts. Maybe I should just sit outside and knit without any distractions for a nice change of pace. Or...maybe someone can suggest another murder mystery that I can watch on my laptop as I sit outside and knit in the sun?
